Ghana’s Alex Amankwah won bronze in the men’s 800m final at the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, securing the host nation’s second medal of the competition on day four of the event.

Amankwah produced an impressive performance in a fiercely contested race to finish third and earn a place on the podium in front of the home fans. His achievement came just hours after Florence Agyeman also claimed bronze in the women’s 400m final to open Ghana’s medal account at the championships.

The two podium finishes have boosted morale within Team Ghana following a difficult start to the competition, particularly after the nation’s top male sprinters missed out on medals in the men’s 100m final earlier in the week.

Amankwah’s bronze medal further highlighted Ghana’s growing competitiveness in middle-distance athletics as supporters at the championship continue to rally behind the host nation in Accra.
