Fashion designer and actor Elikem Kumordzi has come under heavy criticism from netizens after he claimed to have inspired former President John Dramani Mahama’s attire during his recent inauguration.

In a social media post, Elikem shared side-by-side photos of himself in a red agbada outfit adorned with Adinkra symbols and a similar outfit worn by John Dramani Mahama.

In the caption, Elikem explained that many people assumed he was the designer behind the outfit worn by the former president. He clarified that although he was not the designer, he was happy to have inspired the look.

His post read:

“I can understand why everyone thought I made @officialjdmahama’s outfit that day, my phone was going off 😂. Even with the Adinkra symbols and all 🤔. But no, it wasn’t me (in Shaggy’s voice), I’m just happy to have inspired 🙏.
Congratulations again to HE @officialjdmahama. Well deserved, sir.”

Elikem’s claim, however, sparked a wave of backlash on social media, with netizens accusing him of trying to overshadow the designer behind Mahama’s attire. Many criticised him for consistently attempting to insert himself into moments of significance, even when they had little to do with him.

Some social media users went as far as to label his statement as attention-seeking. One user commented, “Elikem always wants to be in the spotlight. Why can’t you just celebrate the president without making it about you?” Another added, “Let the designer have their moment. This isn’t about you.”

Meanwhile, John Dramani Mahama’s agbada-style outfit, rich in traditional Ghanaian aesthetics with its intricate Adinkra symbols, earned widespread praise during the inauguration. The outfit was designed by Matthew Agambire.

Mathew Agambire is a young fashion designer from Accra who has gradually established himself over the years. Last year, he received a nomination for “40Under40Ghana.”

In addition to dressing President Mahama, Agambire has fashioned a number of other well-known people, such as Bola Ray, Mustapha Hamid, Gabby Asare Okyere Darko, and Sammy Gyamfi.
