The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has fined some food vendors operating at Rawlings Park GH¢1,000 each for failing to suspend their activities during the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.
The vendors were issued on-the-spot fines by the Assembly’s enforcement team after they were found selling despite directives requiring businesses within the area to temporarily close and participate in the sanitation exercise.
The enforcement action forms part of the AMA’s efforts to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations and encourage residents, traders, and businesses to support initiatives aimed at improving cleanliness across the capital.
According to the Assembly, the penalties are meant to deter individuals and businesses from disregarding directives issued as part of the National Sanitation Day campaign.
The AMA has consistently maintained that the success of sanitation exercises depends on the active involvement and cooperation of all stakeholders.
The National Sanitation Day initiative seeks to improve hygiene in communities, reduce indiscriminate waste disposal, and promote responsible waste management practices through regular clean-up activities.
The Assembly has reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation by-laws and warned that businesses and individuals who fail to comply with future sanitation directives could face similar sanctions.
