The cycling road race at Olebu, at the 2023 African Games, faced an unexpected delay on Sunday morning as the race start was held up for over an hour due to the unavailability of fuel in the ambulance.
Scheduled to kick off at 9:00 am, the race encountered a significant setback as both the ambulance and team cars were absent, essential components for the safe conduct of the event.
It took a superior intervention to address the fuel shortage issue and allow the race to commence.
Officials and participants alike were left frustrated as the delay persisted, highlighting organizational challenges at the Games. Videos, shared by officials themselves, captured the urgency and the subsequent resolution as the ambulance was fueled to ensure the safety of the cyclists.
The cycling delay is just one in a series of challenges faced by athletes, with reports of power outages disrupting the Black Princesses’ win at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Saturday in the female football competitrion.
There have also been complaints from other athletes about the absence of resources affecting their performances in various games, including badminton and cycling.
As the African Games continue, the focus now turns to the organizers to address these issues promptly, ensuring the smooth conduct of the remaining events and preserving the integrity of the competition.
