Lawyer Jerry Avenorgbor has defended former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah against allegations of visa fraud linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting his client did not collect money to secure visas for applicants.Avenorgbor said Ampofo Ankrah had been cooperating with police investigators over the past four weeks and expressed confidence that the ongoing process would clarify the allegations against him.The former NSA boss was asked to step aside by President John Dramani Mahama as investigations into an alleged visa scandal surrounding the tournament continued. In an interview with JoySports, Avenorgbor said he and his client had repeatedly engaged with investigators as part of what he described as an extensive investigative process. He said the cooperation had helped police gain a clearer understanding of the matter. We have cooperated and continue to cooperate with the police, and we believe they now have a very clear understanding of this matter, Avenorgbor said. The lawyer also firmly rejected claims that Ampofo Ankrah had been involved in receiving payments from individuals in exchange for helping them obtain visas. My client has not met, dealt with, or associated with any person for the purpose of collecting money, in whatever currency, to secure a visa for anyone, he said. The allegations form part of a wider controversy surrounding visa arrangements connected to Ghanas involvement in the 2026 World Cup, which has prompted scrutiny and calls for accountability.Investigations remain ongoing, and Ampofo Ankrahs alleged involvement has not been established.
