The Anglican Diocese of Koforidua has issued a resolute and urgent call to the Ghanaian government, stressing the immediate need for strict enforcement of laws against corruption and prosecution of suspected offenders.
In a nine-point communique released at the conclusion of the third session of the 14th synod of the diocese held at the St Augustine Anglican Church, Larteh Akuapem, in the Eastern Region last month, the church underscored the pervasive nature of corruption in Ghana and identified it as a significant threat to national development.
The communique, signed by the diocese’s bishop, Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annancy emphasized the importance of disciplining government officials engaged in indiscipline and lawlessness through due process and adherence to the law.
The church further urged Christians and all citizens to exemplify honesty, integrity, and selflessness, advocating for probity, transparency, and accountability in public and private life.
Regarding the economy, the synod acknowledged improvements in various sectors despite challenges posed by external factors. It highlighted ongoing economic difficulties affecting a significant portion of the population, but also stressed the potential benefits of these improvements translating into tangible GDP growth, bringing hope for a brighter future.
Addressing youth unemployment, the communique expressed concern about the potential social challenges posed by a growing population of unemployed youth, calling on the government and private sector to provide robust support and encourage youth engagement in agricultural and industrial ventures.
Looking ahead to the upcoming 7 December general elections, the Anglican Church commended Ghana for maintaining stable democracy and constitutional rule under the Fourth Republic. It urged all citizens, political parties, and stakeholders to prioritize peace and unity throughout the electoral process, instilling a sense of reassurance and confidence.
Additionally, the synod called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and state security agencies to rigorously enforce laws against electoral malpractices to ensure free and fair elections.
The Anglican Diocese of Koforidua’s communique is a significant appeal for governmental action on corruption, economic reform, youth empowerment, and electoral integrity ahead of Ghana’s upcoming national elections.
