The town of Ejura in Ghana’s Ashanti Region descended into chaos on January 11, 2025, after the death of a young man in police custody sparked outrage among residents. The man, arrested for allegedly purchasing a stolen phone, reportedly died while in custody. Without informing his family, police moved his body to the morgue, a decision that enraged the local youth and set off a violent uprising.
The angry crowd attacked the Ejura police station, setting it on fire along with nearby houses and vehicles. They also broke into the cells and freed all the detainees.
The situation got worse as the youth threw stones at the police, who responded by firing gunshots. The Ghana Armed Forces were called in to calm things down, but the damage was already done.
