Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan believes Antoine Semenyo will be the star at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the forward as the current face of Ghana football.
Semenyo heads into the tournament on the back of an outstanding season at club level and is widely expected to play a leading role for the Black Stars as they seek to make an impact on the global stage.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Gyan acknowledged the pressure that comes with the striker’s growing reputation and success in one of the world’s top leagues.
“There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo going to the World Cup. Ki People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team, but as a former player and a striker, I have to be in his shoes.”
Ghana’s all-time top scorer noted that expectations naturally increase when a player performs at the highest level for his club, insisting that supporters will expect Semenyo to replicate that form in national team colours.
“There will be a bit of pressure because of where he’s playing now. When you’re playing for one of the best teams in the world and you come into the national team, there will be a lot of expectations,” Gyan added.
Gyan went even further by suggesting that Ghana’s fortunes at the World Cup could largely depend on the 26-year-old forward. “He’s the face of Ghana football right now because of his position and what he has done for himself. Everything is going to depend on Antoine Semenyo for this World Cup.”
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, with many eyes set to be on Semenyo as he looks to lead the team’s charge on football’s biggest stage.
