The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has received official notification of the death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Paramount Chief of Mampong and second-in-command of the Asante Kingdom.
A delegation from the Asante Bretuo Royal Family, led by Mamponghemaa Nana Afrakoma Dufie, delivered the news at Manhyia Palace in keeping with Asante tradition.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 86. Before his enstoolment in 1997, he was known as Oswald Saith Gyimah and served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). His reign spanned 28 years, during which he played a pivotal role in the Asante Kingdom’s governance.
Following the announcement, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II instructed the Mampong Traditional Council to commence the necessary customary rites, including the traditional drumming ceremonies that formally communicate a chief’s transition. The observance marks the beginning of a period of mourning and preparation for succession rituals.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s passing leaves a significant void in Asante’s traditional leadership structure. As the immediate subordinate to the Asantehene, his role was crucial in maintaining the kingdom’s administrative and cultural affairs. The coming weeks will see the Mampong Traditional Council and the Asanteman Council collaborate to ensure a smooth transition in accordance with centuries-old customs.
His legacy includes contributions to education and traditional governance, having bridged academia and chieftaincy with distinction. The final funeral rites, expected to draw dignitaries and traditional leaders from across Ghana, will honor his service and solidify his place in Asante history.
