The Principal of Accra School of Hygiene, Korle-Bu, Mr. Smile Kobina Ametsi has said the institution will continue to provide world-class education that goes beyond traditional class environment to enable students to become ambassadors for change, and advocate public health across the country.
He said the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 ensures a healthy life and the promotion of the well-being of humanity hence students must make conscious effort in disease prevention and be guardians in public health and challenge students to ensure the safe provision of safe and adequate sanitation facilities in communities saying they are the future health and sanitations practitioners in that demanding sector.
Mr. Smile Ametsi was speaking at the 2023/2024 maiden matriculation ceremony of the Accra School of Hygiene on the theme, “Ensuring the training of quality environmental health and sanitation professional in attaining the SDGs 3, 4 and 6 by 20230 and beyond”.
The students comprises of 38 regular, 20 top up level 200 and 7 top -up level 300 making a total number 65 students to pursue a degree in BSc Environmental health sanitation program at the institution affiliated to the University of Cape Coast.
He said student population keep increasing and explained that it must have a corresponding increase in infrastructure for a conducive learning environment for students and therefore appealed to government and corporate bodies for support.
According to him, the programme will build capacities and enhance their knowledge to adequately address health and environmental issues in the country and initiatives to roll out in the fields of works.
The Principal thus advice students to assiduously work on their practical training programmes to have an indepth understanding in the public health and environmental space to enable them deal with issues associated with sanitation and hygiene.
Acting Registrar of the Allied Health Professionals Council, Mr. Daniel Atta Nyarko commended the institution for putting in place the requisite structures to gain accreditation to run its’s academic disciplines and programmes.
The Head of Department of Civic and Environmental Engineering of UCC, Prof. Peter Appiah Obeng urged the school authorities to exhibit best practises in all teaching endeavours to enable the school be at a competitive edge over other related institutions in the world.
