Before many audiences knew his story, they first heard the voice.
At the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards, that voice proved impossible to ignore, as emerging singer Asiama claimed the Best Male Vocal Performance award with his debut single, Akoma.
The song also secured a nomination for Record of the Year and earned recognition in the Best Audio Engineer category for its producer, an exceptional breakthrough for the young artiste.
The achievement represents a rare triple milestone for Asiama a debut single, a first nomination and a maiden major award win at the country’s biggest music event.
While industry observers have described the feat as unusual, it is less about surprise and more about the maturity and emotional depth displayed in a first official release.
Asiama’s performance on Akoma is marked by restraint, vulnerability and spiritual sincerity, qualities that have distinguished his vocal style from many emerging acts.
Long before his recent success, audiences first encountered him as a 12-year-old contestant on X Factor, where his performance impressed judges including Reggie Rockstone, M.I Abaga and the late Onyeka Onwenu.
At the time, Onwenu encouraged the young singer not to be discouraged by competition rules, predicting that by the time he came of age, he would have outgrown such contests.
Those words remained with Asiama and later influenced his decision to pursue music professionally with patience and intention.
His musical journey would eventually bring him under the mentorship of celebrated producer and musician Kwame Yeboah, who has described Asiama as “a rare gem”.
The artistic ecosystem around the singer has also been shaped by Be.love, led by founder Tina Atiemo.
Written as a prayer rooted in trust in God, Akoma explores the emotional and spiritual tension between desire and the conscious pursuit of divine strength to overcome the temptations of the heart and mind.
Though the breakthrough may appear sudden, Asiama’s latest triumph suggests a voice refined over years of preparation, discipline and artistic growth.
