Black Stars and Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has opened up on the difficult journey he endured in previous years before becoming one of Ghana’s top goalkeepers.
The 33-year-old shared his inspiring story during an appearance on The Delay Show, revealing the various jobs he did while chasing his football dreams.
“During my primary school days, I sold polythene bags while studying. I also trained as a carpenter, a steel bender, and a bus conductor,” Asare disclosed.
The experienced goalie further explained that life was extremely difficult growing up and he had to combine football with several jobs just to survive.
“Despite my football career, I still made time to do all of these things because I was a hustler and had to survive,” he added.
Asare’s story highlights the remarkable rise he has made in recent years. He earned his Black Stars debut in March 2025 against Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and has since established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.
He has also enjoyed an outstanding season with Hearts of Oak, recording 15 clean sheets so far and playing a key role for the Phobians.
His impressive performances earned him another Black Stars call-up for next week’s international friendly against Mexico alongside teammate Solomon Agbasi.
Benjamin Asare is also widely expected to make coach Carlos Queiroz’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
