Bimbila MP Dominic Nitiwul has raised concerns over the potential deterioration of Ghana’s sports infrastructure due to the absence of dedicated maintenance funds.Stadia across the country are said to be in bad condition, with the Sports Minister disclosing that the Accra and Baba Yara Stadia will be closed for maintenance soon.Parliament recently approved a budget of 65 million cedis for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, but none of it has been allocated for infrastructure upkeep.Nitiwul believes this oversight could put newly built and renovated facilities at risk, especially those used for the African Games. The former Defence Minister stressed the importance of securing capital funding to sustain these facilities while commenting on the budget allocation for sports. He further criticized the lack of financial commitment to infrastructure, emphasizing that sports play a crucial role in national development.”If you look at the massive infrastructure development because of the All African Games that the former Ministry undertook, They [the current Ministry] will need a lot of capital injection to be able to keep this facility well,” he said on the floor of Parliament.”There is no capital expenditure, it is zero. The finance should speak to this issues because Sports is so important to all of us especially, football.”You cannot have a situation where by the [Sports Ministry] has nothing for capital expenditure, not even 10m cedis for him [Sports Minister] to at least take care of the pitches.”
