Ranking Member on Parliament’s Youth, Sports & Culture Committee Hon. Komla Woyome, says Black Meteors players made money their focus, and that contributed to their shock early exit from U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Komla Woyome was in Morocco alongside the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Evans Bobbie Opoku and Hon.Evans Antwi, also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee of Youth, Sports & Culture.
The Black Meteors had a poor campaign, failing to advance past the group stage of a competition in which they hoped to place in the top three to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
Despite starting the tournament with a 3-2 win over Congo, they were walloped 5-1 by Morocco in their second game leaving them with the only option of winning against Guinea and proceeding to the semi-finals.
However, after taking the lead in the first half, their dismal defensive approach presented Guinea the opportunity to level confirming Ghana’s elimination.
Speaking about the antecedents of Ghana’s failure, Komla Woyome said the players showed no commitment in playing for the national colors while adding that, the technical team were lethargic in their work.
“Black Meteors players were after money and not committed. The technical team led by the head coach ( Ibrahim Tanko ) were a bit lazy in executing their professional work,” he told Onua FM.
It has been confirmed by the Chairman of the management committee of the team Frederick Acheampong that the technical team and playing body have been effectively dissolved due to their inability to reach their goal.
Their exit means they would have to wait until at least 2027 to be sure of returning to the Olympic Games since they last appeared in 2004 when it was hosted in Athens, Greece.
