Ghana’s senior women national team, the Black Queens, have withdrawn from the upcoming three-nation tournament in Tanzania, with the Ghana Football Association yet to provide an official explanation for the decision.
The tournament was expected to feature Ghana, hosts Tanzania and Malawi as part of preparations for major international assignments.
However, reports indicate that the Black Queens will no longer participate in the competition despite initial plans for the team to be involved.
The withdrawal comes at a crucial stage of the Black Queens’ preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be staged in Morocco from July 26 to August 16.
While the GFA has confirmed Ghana’s withdrawal from the tournament, no reason has been communicated to supporters, leaving many questioning the circumstances behind the decision.
The development is likely to raise concerns among fans, considering the importance of competitive matches ahead of the continental showpiece. The tournament in Tanzania would have provided the Black Queens with valuable game time and an opportunity for the technical team to assess players before the start of WAFCON.
Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren recently named a squad for the team’s June training camp as preparations intensified for the tournament, where Ghana will be aiming to make a strong impression and re-establish themselves among Africa’s leading women’s football nations.
For now, attention will turn to whether the GFA offers an explanation for the withdrawal and if alternative friendly matches will be arranged to ensure the Black Queens remain adequately prepared for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
