The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have appointed Kim Lars Bjrkegren to lead the Black Stars’ interim technical team for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia next month.Bjrkegren will work alongside Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistant coaches, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been named goalkeepers’ coach. The appointments follow recommendations from the five-member Black Stars Coach Search Committee, chaired by Fred Pappoe, as Ghana seek to revive their qualifying campaign after a disappointing start. The Black Stars are without a substantive head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz after consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia. In a joint statement, the GFA and the Sports Ministry said the interim arrangement was intended to provide continuity and experienced leadership while the search for a permanent coach continues.Following an extensive review process and consultations with a number of qualified coaching candidates, the Committee determined that the most effective approach for this important period was the appointment of a complementary technical team capable of providing continuity, experienced leadership, and a strategic direction as the Black Stars navigate an important period of transition and renewal, the statement said. The two institutions said the coaching team brings together international experience, local knowledge and an understanding of Ghanaian football.Additional technical and support staff will be appointed to assist the team during the November international window. The interim arrangement will apply specifically to the matches against Somalia, with the search committee continuing its work towards appointing a substantive head coach.Ghana endured a difficult start to their Group C campaign, losing 2-0 away to Ivory Coast before suffering a 4-2 defeat against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. Those results have left the Black Stars bottom of the group without a point, increasing the pressure on the team to collect maximum points from their remaining fixtures.Ghana are scheduled to face Somalia in a double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying next month. The Black Stars are seeking a return to the continental showpiece after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
