The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Professor Amin Alhassan has called on the Ghana Broadcasting Association, to check the powers of telecommunication networks regarding broadcast transmission.

According to him, the telcos are becoming fundamental to broadcasting, and media accessibility is dependent on telcos.

“As I sit here, Vodafone has the power to terminate transmission on GBC systems without notice. We can’t sit quietly and let these powers go unchecked. They have the power to do that because our signal transmission goes through their network”, he stated at the launch of the 2023 State of the Ghanaian Media report.

Professor Alhassan added that the dominance of telco networks over the media is gradually becoming a threat to the media because the telcos may take advantage to retire traditional media in the next five years.

“Media is about content distribution and if telcos know their networks are the backbone of the media transmission, they will find a profitable venture into content distribution, ” he disclosed.

In a typical case, Prof. Alhassan cited the MTN Ayoba App which is used by MTN for content distribution at no internet charges. This according to Prof. Alhassan is tantamount to unfair competition.

“You can’t own a network and also do media distribution”, he added.
