The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the squad registration limit for clubs competing in its Interclub competitions to 40 players, giving teams greater flexibility during the continental season. The decision follows a virtual CAF Executive Committee meeting chaired by president, Patrice Motsepe on Friday, October 2, 2026.The change is expected to help clubs manage the demands of domestic and continental football, particularly with congested schedules, injuries, fatigue and extensive travel across Africa.CAF has also introduced a provision allowing clubs to replace up to four players during the final registration period. However, any player being replaced must not have featured in a CAF Interclub match during the same campaign. One of the major changes is the removal of the cup-tied restriction, meaning a player can now represent another club in CAF Interclub competitions after previously featuring for a different participating team in the same campaign. The regulation could provide clubs with greater flexibility during the mid-season transfer window as they look to strengthen their squads for the latter stages of the competition.Despite the changes, CAF has maintained the requirement for clubs to register new players at least 72 hours before kick-off for them to be eligible to feature in a match.Clubs will also continue to be allowed to name nine substitutes and nine members of the technical staff on the matchday bench.
