Most Rev. Gabriel Anokye, the Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, has called on Christians to pursue leadership positions in both corporate and political spheres, emphasizing the significant impact they can have on national progress.
His remarks came during the inaugural annual Catholic corporate mass held at Christ the King Parish in Accra, a collaboration with Quality Insurance Company (QIC) to foster professional networking and celebrate shared values.
Archbishop Anokye emphasized the need for committed individuals to step forward and contribute to societal development. “Let those who can do it—in the church, the state, do it. We cannot remain in poverty forever. It is impossible; we cannot stay here forever,” he said, clarifying that this does not mean the church should directly control the state, but rather that Christians should be active in all spheres of society.
He further advocated for the involvement of ethical leaders, inspiring the audience to uphold moral standards in their roles. He stated, “When will the crème de la crème of our society, one day, not stand for elections, hold the hand of somebody known to be very, very good, to lead the way? It could be a Christian or a Catholic; why not? We need holy politicians, holy business corporate professionals.”
The Archbishop stressed the importance of integrity in leadership, urging for ‘holy heirs of state,’ a term he used to refer to assembly members, mayors, and other officials who should embody righteousness and fear of God in their roles.
In his address, Archbishop Anokye also called for peace as the country approaches the December elections.
He highlighted the need for stability and security, reassuring the audience that a peaceful and stable future is within reach. “As we navigate the national ship towards the seashore of general elections, we must pray and work for a more peaceful, secure, and stable country in the light of God’s word. Behold, I make all things new.”
