The Bank of Ghana has officially announced activities to celebrate 60 years since the cedi became Ghana’s sole legal tender. The celebration, under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience,” will begin on Friday, July 19, 2025.

‎In a notice released and signed by the Bank’s Secretary, Sandra Thompson, on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Bank invites the general public, stakeholders, and development partners to participate in the upcoming events, which will run from August to December.

‎The celebration will kick off in August with a launch event at the Accra International Conference Centre. Other activities include the opening of a Currency Museum in partnership with the National Museum of Science and Technology, along with mobile exhibitions to educate the public on the history of the cedi.

‎Also in August, there will be an educational campaign focusing on proper cash handling, the currency life cycle, and security features of the cedi.

‎In September, the Bank will organize community engagement activities such as outreach forums, stakeholder dialogues, interactive roadshows, and a “Cedi Week.”

‎October is dedicated to students, with an essay competition and a quiz on the theme of the anniversary.

‎In November, a special “Cedi@60” Currency Conference will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre. The conference will be hosted by the Bank in collaboration with Currency Research.

‎The celebrations will end in December with a national Thanksgiving service.

‎The Bank says the event is to honour the cedi as a symbol of Ghana’s independence, economic progress, and resilience over the past six decades.
