Ghana head coach Chris Hughton says it would be “a wonderful thing” if he can break the coaching jinx.

Just two of the last five coaches of Ghana have won their first game.

Kwesi Appiah back in 2017, started his second stint on the best possible note beating Ethiopia 5-0.

Milovan Rajevac also began his second stint on an impressive note dispatching Zimbabwe 3-1 at the Cape Coast stadium in 2021.

Aside those two, CK Akonnor, Avram Grant and Otto Addo have all failed to win their opening games as head coach.

Hughton speaking at the press conference before the Angola match acknowledged the importance of a win.

“Yes, it’s important we win our first game but also it’s not about the head coach. It’s about us playing a game against a very good opposition in Angola.”

The former Brighton coach is already looking beyond the Angola game and hopes that he Black Stars will qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and do well.

“Our aim of course is to qualify for the AFCON and to do well in the AFCON and the only way you can do that is by winning football matches.”

Ghana and Angola are joint top of Group E for the AFCON qualifiers and face off at the Baba Yara sports stadium on Thursday.
