Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo says there is a lot of waste of state resources in the process to review the 1992 constitution.
He stressed the need for government to be made to account for financial loss to the state.
According to him, the work of the Constitution Review Commission that spent lots of state money in reviewing the Constitution has been rendered useless.
“We started the Constitution review process, this government came into office and they decided to abandon the process when at the last minute of their 8-year regime, we are told that some people in Parliament have also set up a certain committee to look at the work that had already been done,” he wondered.
He stressed the need for government to be taken to task.
“I don’t know what is wrong with us as a nation, but somebody must sue somebody in this particular regime in court for causing financial loss to the state, because we expended a lot of money in our constitution review process,” Prof Gyampo lamented in an interview with TV3.
The constitution gives too much power to the presidency; we’ll review it – Bawumia
There have been intense calls for Ghana’s 1992 constitution to be reviewed to reflect the current times and development.
Several actions towards the review of the constitution have not yielded any result. Civil Society Organisations have lamented the lack of commitment to ensuring the review of the constitution to limit certain Executive powers.
However, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bawumia has assured that he will review the constitution when he captures power in the next elections.
