CPP’s Kwame Jantuah Criticizes President Akufo-Addo Over Galamsey Fight, Calls for Ban on Small-Scale Mining

Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, a senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a seasoned legal practitioner, has sharply criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his handling of the galamsey (illegal mining) crisis in Ghana.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Jantuah expressed significant dissatisfaction with the President’s performance addressing the rampant illegal mining activities that have severely impacted the country’s water bodies and environment.

Jantuah’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment of discontent among individuals, civil society organizations, and public institutions who have voiced their frustrations over the escalating galamsey activities under the current administration.

The widespread destruction of water resources and the environmental degradation from these activities have been a significant concern.

During the discussion, Jantuah urged President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action by implementing a comprehensive ban on galamsey and small-scale mining.

He acknowledged that while small-scale mining contributes to the economy by generating income and employment, the industry requires an immediate and thorough reset to address its negative impacts.

“Is this what Ghana should be? If, for anything, the President came to us and said he is ready to ban small-scale mining and all these activities for a particular duration, let’s see how we can reset this sector.

There’s money to be made, and there is employment in it. Let’s see how we can reset it and, in doing so, bring everyone together to decide how to move forward,” Jantuah stated.

His call for a reset underscores the urgent need for a structured approach to managing the small-scale mining sector, aiming to balance economic benefits with environmental and public health considerations.

Jantuah’s stance reflects growing calls for more effective and collaborative measures to address the galamsey menace and restore the integrity of Ghana’s natural resources.
