Black Starlets midfielder David Kwarteng scored the opening goal of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship as Ghana began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Togo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Kwarteng struck in the seventh minute of the Group A match on Saturday, October 10, at the August 4 Sports Stadium to become the first player to score at this years tournament.

The goal followed a set-piece move started by Abdul Latif Wunzalgu. Togo initially blocked the free-kick, but Ghana captain Abdul Rafiu Issah had a further attempt before Kwarteng reacted quickest to put the ball in the net.

That early advantage proved enough for the Black Starlets, who defended their lead to claim all three points from their opening fixture.

Ghanas win moved them to the top of Group A after the other match ended in a goalless draw between hosts Burkina Faso and Benin.

Kwartengs goal gives Ghana an ideal start as they seek qualification for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations through the regional tournament.

The Black Starlets will play their second group match against Benin on Tuesday, October 13. Kwarteng and his team-mates will attempt to maintain their positive start in Ouagadougou.
