The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has retrieved the badly decomposed remains of a young woman from a septic tank in Sunyani Magazine, with police arresting her boyfriend as the prime suspect in her alleged murder.

The grim discovery, made on Friday, February 28, 2025, follows a three-week search after the victim was reported missing.

Responding to a distress call, personnel from the Sunyani Municipal Fire Station, led by Station Officer Yahaya, arrived at the scene around 5:30 PM. Regional Operations Officer DO II Noekor later joined the operation, which involved extracting the body from the underground tank—a process described as “challenging and sensitive” due to advanced decomposition.

Preliminary police reports suggest the victim was killed approximately three weeks earlier, with her boyfriend accused of dumping her body in the septic tank to conceal the crime. Authorities have not yet released her identity pending forensic analysis and an autopsy.

The suspect, whose name remains undisclosed, is in custody as investigations continue. The arrest has intensified calls for justice from shaken residents, many demanding accountability amid rising concerns over domestic violence in Ghana.

This case highlights a disturbing pattern of intimate partner homicides, prompting renewed appeals from law enforcement for citizens to report signs of abuse. “We urge communities to speak up—early intervention can save lives,” a police spokesperson stated, pledging a thorough probe to uncover the full circumstances of the tragedy.

As forensic teams work to piece together the timeline, the incident has left Sunyani grappling with grief and outrage, underscoring the urgent need to address gender-based violence nationwide.
