The Diaspora Affairs Office of the President has endorsed a strategic partnership with Global Volunteers Corps to implement the Ghana Diaspora Volunteerism Initiative (GDVI), a programme aimed at strengthening diaspora participation in national development.
The endorsement, announced in Accra, is expected to provide a structured platform for Ghanaians living abroad to contribute their skills, expertise, resources and professional experience to Ghana’s socio-economic transformation through volunteer service.
The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between the Ghanaian diaspora and local communities by creating volunteer opportunities across key sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, entrepreneurship, technology, environmental sustainability, youth development, tourism and community empowerment.
According to the organisers, the partnership represents a significant step toward harnessing the expertise and knowledge of Ghanaians abroad beyond traditional financial remittances.
Speaking on the collaboration, President of Global Volunteers Corps, Stephen Kwaku Darku, described the Ghanaian diaspora as one of the country’s most valuable assets and underscored the importance of creating avenues for active engagement in national development.
“The Ghanaian diaspora remains one of the nation’s greatest assets. Through this initiative, we aim to create sustainable pathways for Ghanaians abroad to actively contribute to the development of their homeland, not only through remittances but also through the transfer of knowledge, innovation, mentorship, and volunteer service,” he said.
The initiative aligns with government efforts to leverage the expertise, networks and resources of the diaspora community as a strategic partner in nation-building. It is expected to facilitate stronger collaboration between diaspora professionals, local institutions, government agencies, traditional authorities, educational institutions and community-based organisations.
Officials noted that the endorsement by the Diaspora Affairs Office demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to fostering inclusive development by engaging citizens beyond its borders and creating opportunities for meaningful participation in national progress.
Under the partnership framework, Global Volunteers Corps will work closely with the Diaspora Affairs Office and other stakeholders to establish volunteer deployment mechanisms, diaspora engagement programmes, capacity-building activities and impact-driven projects across communities nationwide.
The Ghana Diaspora Volunteerism Initiative is also expected to promote skills transfer, cultural exchange, volunteerism and investment opportunities while strengthening ties between Ghana and its diaspora community.
Stakeholders believe the programme could become a flagship platform for mobilising diaspora expertise to support sustainable development efforts and accelerate community transformation across the country.
As implementation begins, both institutions expressed optimism that the initiative will encourage more Ghanaians living abroad to reconnect with their roots and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development agenda through volunteer service and knowledge-sharing.
Global Volunteers Corps is an international volunteer-driven organisation that promotes volunteerism as a catalyst for sustainable development, humanitarian action, environmental protection, youth empowerment, education, healthcare and community transformation in Ghana and beyond.
