Ghanaian defender Ebenezer Annan is expected to miss the Black Stars’ upcoming international friendly against Mexico due to club commitments with French side AS Saint-Étienne.

Annan was recently named in new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz’s squad as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The friendly against Mexico on May 22 is expected to provide the technical team with an important opportunity to assess players ahead of the tournament.

However, the left-back’s availability has become uncertain as Saint-Étienne continue their push for promotion to the French top flight. Annan has been a key player for the club during the campaign and is expected to play an important role in the decisive final stages of the season.

Reports indicate that Saint-Étienne are reluctant to release the defender for international duty at such a crucial point in their promotion battle.

The situation leaves Annan facing a difficult decision between national team duties and helping his club secure a return to Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, Augustine Boakye, another Ghanaian player at Saint-Étienne who also received a Black Stars call-up, is similarly expected to miss the Mexico friendly because of the club’s commitments.

Ghana will take on Mexico on Friday, May 22, as preparations continue for the World Cup in North America.
