Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has cast doubt on the future of goalkeeper Ederson amid ongoing interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Speaking after City’s 4-3 defeat to Celtic in a pre-season friendly in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Guardiola admitted he cannot guarantee Ederson’s stay at the club this summer.
“I’d like him to stay but it depends on other clubs,” Guardiola said. “I don’t know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes and we’ll see.”
Ederson, who was a key figure for City last season, was notably substituted at half-time during the Celtic match, with Stefan Ortega starting in goal.
Despite his role as first-choice goalkeeper, Guardiola’s decision to use Ortega in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid has raised speculation about Ederson’s future.
Guardiola explained the decision, stating, “That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes. I don’t know what’s going to happen. He knows the situation, and we’ll see.”
Manchester City, who are aiming to defend their Premier League title and achieve a record fourth consecutive championship, are awaiting clarity on Ederson’s status as the transfer window progresses.
The club’s focus remains on preparation for the upcoming season, with Guardiola and his team looking to build on their recent successes.
