The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has lodged an official complaint with FIFA over the officiating in Egypt’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The federation has called for an investigation into the performance of French referee François Letexier and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, arguing that a number of key decisions had a significant impact on the outcome of the match.
Central to the complaint is a goal scored by Egypt that was disallowed following a VAR review, a decision the EFA believes influenced the final result. The federation contends that several contentious calls during the encounter unfairly disadvantaged the Pharaohs in their bid to progress in the tournament.
In addition to requesting a formal investigation, the EFA has urged FIFA to remove Letexier and his officiating team from the remainder of the World Cup, citing concerns over their handling of the match.
The complaint comes amid growing scrutiny of refereeing standards at the tournament, with the EFA insisting that the integrity of the competition must be protected through transparent reviews of controversial officiating decisions. FIFA is yet to respond publicly to Egypt’s request.
