The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on the Electoral Commission to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

She noted that maintaining peace is easier when the electoral process is open, transparent, and credible.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made the call when she addressed a durbar of the chiefs and people of Axim in the Western Region, as part of this year’s Kundum festival.

She urged leaders to always promote peace and development.

“I hope that the chiefs and people of Axim will continue to ensure peace and tolerate each other’s views, especially this year, as we prepare to elect committed and deserving leaders in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in December,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

She expressed hope that Ghanaians will elect leaders who are dedicated to serving the people in the December elections.

“In this election, we must strive to elect individuals who exhibit the true characteristics of servant leaders, and I am confident that the chiefs and people of Axim will vote to retain the current Member of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Arkoe Nokoe, in December 2024,” she added.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted several key projects initiated by the NDC government during its time in office in the Axim area. Notable among them are the Axim Sea Defense Project, the asphalting of Axim town roads in 2015, the construction of a new Municipal Fire Service office, the Axim Divisional Police Command Office block, and the initiation of a mini harbour, which has since been altered into a landing beach. “Nananom, I want to assure you that the NDC will ensure this project is reverted to its original plan,” she promised.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also mentioned the establishment of the Axim Girls Senior High School, which, through the efforts of Awulae Attibrukusu III, gained prominence.

Touching on illegal mining, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang remarked that the menace is affecting the livelihoods of many people, including those in Axim and surrounding areas. She stated that the next NDC government will not associate with or appoint individuals suspected of being involved in illegal and irresponsible mining.

“We will not align ourselves with or appoint any persons known to be involved or connected with galamsey, as seen in the current government,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasised.

She commended the chiefs for their unity and vision in promoting development among their people, calling for continued unity, tolerance, and peace among the natives of Axim and beyond, especially as the 2024 elections approach.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the youth to abstain from being used as agents of violence before and during the general elections.

She assured the people of Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, and Ghanaians at large, that the NDC is committed to peaceful elections, and called on the chiefs to raise their voices to ensure the Electoral Commission upholds fairness.
