Lawyers for Dennis Miracles Aboagye have described the GH¢50 million bail conditions imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as impossible to meet, saying their client remains in custody because he has been unable to satisfy the requirements.
Speaking to journalists at EOCO’s headquarters in Accra, lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea questioned the practicality of the bail conditions, which require three sureties, two of whom must be justified.
According to him, it would be unrealistic for his client to secure qualifying sureties and properties worth GH¢50 million within the available timeframe.
“How is he going to be released? How is he going to post the bail bonds? GH¢50 million, three sureties, two to be justified. How can it be met? Where are you going to find properties worth GH¢50 million and finding it tonight?” he questioned.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, was arrested by EOCO at the Accra International Airport.
According to EOCO, the arrest is linked to alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities involving approximately GH¢55 million during his tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD).
The anti-graft agency said he is being investigated together with the Secretariat’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged irregularities.
