Evelyn Badu believes the Black Queens must avoid another slow start when they face Malawi in Sunday’s decisive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinal.Ghana’s 2-0 victory over Cape Verde was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon before a 1-1 draw with Mali secured their passage to the knockout stage.Badu believes the lessons from the Cameroon defeat must guide Ghana against Malawi.”In the game against Cameroon, we didn’t really show up in the first half, but in the second half, we came back strong. We shall take that to the game against Malawi,” she said.”We have to start strong. We cannot afford to waste 45 minutes and then go into the second half chasing the game.”The midfielder insists the entire squad must remain united from the opening whistle.”We have to come out of the first half strong, fighting together as a team.”Ghana’s quarterfinal against Malawi carries added significance, with a place in the semifinals and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.Badu says the Black Queens are determined to go beyond the bronze medal they won at the previous WAFCON.”We won the medal last year, but we know that there is more for us. We want to reach the final.”
