Former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan says his biggest regret in his career is missing Ghana’s crucial penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final, eventually missing out on further making history at the world’s biggest stage.
Gyan was known for his brilliance in attacking positions and his ability to score crucial goals for the teams he always found himself playing for.
He is Ghana’s record goal scorer, yet every top footballer has bad moments in their career, and Gyan insists that his penalty miss in 2010 is one that will live with him in his memory for a long time
Speaking in an interview with Onua TV on the Maakye show, Gyan said: “I live in my dream and everyone sees the passion I play football with. That penalty miss was my biggest regret. That’s the only negativity that can be associated with me.”
Asamoah Gyan led Ghana to two Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2010 and 2015, alongside three successive FIFA World Cup campaigns in 2006, 2010, and 2014, and he holds the record for the most goals (6) by an African player in World Cup history.
However, Gyan’s career is an example of how much hard work and determination can lead to satisfaction on a personal level, yet a moment of failing to grab the opportunity can also come back to haunt players for many years of their careers and individual lives.
