Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Gideon Doku has advised women to refrain from engaging in sexual relations with multiple partners to lower their risk of developing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

During a discussion on Gtv breakfast show, the gynecologist educated the public on Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, sharing insights on its causes, symptoms, effects and treatment.

PID is an infection of the female reproductive system, which includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. This condition often arises when sexually transmitted bacteria, such as those causing chlamydia or gonorrhea, spread from the vagina to the reproductive organs.

Dr. Doku emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention from a gynecologist whenever women experience abnormal vaginal discharge, particularly after sexual intercourse.

He noted that many women tend to overlook these symptoms, which can be common indicators of PID.

“When you have discharge, don’t assume it’s normal until you see a gynecologist. While it’s normal to have some discharge during ovulation, an offensive discharge, especially after sex, should prompt you to make a conscious effort to consult a gynecologist, as it could be a warning sign of possible PID,” he stated.

He further stated that infertility can be a cause of pelvic inflammatory disease.

The gynecologist also mentioned that while PID can be treated effectively, women who engage in behaviors that put them at risk may face reinfection.

It is crucial for women to be aware of their reproductive health and take proactive steps to protect themselves.
