Kwasi Kwarteng, former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, has called on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to demonstrate their ability to manage the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme effectively.
In an interview on Oyerepa TV on January 9, 2025, Kwarteng criticised the NDC for their past complaints about the quality of food provided to Free SHS students.
He challenged the current government to back their criticisms with action by significantly improving food standards for students, even suggesting high-end dining options.
“They criticised the food we provided for Free SHS students, saying it wasn’t good enough. Now that they’re in power, let’s see them feed the students in grand style. Perhaps they can take them to places like Kempinski and Lancaster three times a day so everyone can see how capable they are of managing the education sector,” Kwarteng remarked.
He further stated, “Maybe on Saturdays, they can also treat the students to luxurious meals at these five-star establishments in the morning, afternoon, and evening.”
Kwarteng highlighted what he called the “organic politics” at play, where criticism often arises from political rivalry.
He urged the NDC to move beyond words and prove their competence in delivering quality services through the Free SHS programme.

During their time in opposition, the NDC had criticised the previous administration, accusing them of providing substandard and even expired food to SHS students.
Now in government, the party faces pressure to show how it can improve upon the programme they once heavily criticised.
