Ghana’s Florence Agyeman delivered a historic performance by winning bronze in the women’s 400m final at the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, securing the host nation’s first medal of the competition.
Competing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, Agyeman produced a strong finish to place third in the final and give Ghana a major boost after a disappointing outing in the men’s 100m event on Wednesday.
Her achievement comes as a relief for Team Ghana following the failure of highly rated sprinters Joseph Paul Amoah and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu to reach the podium in the men’s 100m final. Amoah finished fourth while Saminu placed sixth despite both athletes winning their respective heats to qualify for the final.
Agyeman’s podium finish has reignited excitement among Ghanaian fans as the championships continue in Accra, with hopes of more medals for the host nation in the remaining events.
