Former Asante Kotoko striker Abdul Fatawu Safiu has reportedly completed a two-year move to newly promoted Debibi United, marking his return to the Ghanaian top flight after a spell away from the league.
The 32-year-old forward, who has been training with the newly promoted side in recent days, has completed the necessary formalities and signed a 24-month contract with the club, circling media reports have claimed.
Safiu’s career has been disrupted by persistent injury problems in recent years, with a serious knee ligament injury derailing his anticipated return to Asante Kotoko earlier this year. His contract with the Porcupine Warriors was subsequently terminated after medical examinations revealed the severity of the injury.
Following successful surgery, Safiu has been undergoing rehabilitation and working towards a full recovery, with his move to Debibi United offering him an opportunity to relaunch his career at the highest level of Ghanaian domestic football.
Before his injury setbacks, Safiu established himself as one of the country’s most prolific forwards. He finished as the top scorer in the 2019 NC Special Competition with 10 goals, earning the Home-Based Player of the Year award at the 2019 Ghana Football Awards.
His first spell with Asante Kotoko further underlined his goalscoring pedigree, as he netted 13 goals in 16 appearances, while also gaining valuable experience in continental competition.
His arrival represents another statement signing for Debibi United as the newly promoted club prepares for its maiden campaign in the Ghana Premier League. The club has adopted an ambitious recruitment strategy, strengthening several areas of the squad, including the acquisition of centre-back Kwame Paul from Hohoe United.
Safiu will now hope to put his injury troubles behind him and rediscover the goalscoring form that once made him one of the most feared strikers in Ghanaian football.
