Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and a respected journalist, writer and intellectual, has died in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness.

The Nkrumah family announced his death in a statement, saying he passed away peacefully while receiving care at a rehabilitation centre in Cairo after suffering a stroke.

Gamal was widely recognised for his engagement with political, social and cultural issues affecting Africa and the wider world. Through his work as a journalist and commentator, he examined questions of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity.

According to the family, he remained deeply committed to these ideals throughout his life, using his writing and intellectual contributions to engage with some of the most pressing issues of his time.

Described by his family as a man of profound intellectual curiosity, independent thought and quiet conviction, Gamal upheld the values associated with his father’s legacy while establishing his own identity and reputation through his work and personal principles.

“His passing represents a profound loss not only to our family and loved ones, but also to the wider community of friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insight, humanity and unwavering engagement with the great questions of our time,” the family said.

The family expressed deep sorrow over his death, remembering him with love, gratitude and pride. It said his wisdom, kindness and commitment to the values he cherished would remain a lasting source of inspiration.

The statement also expressed appreciation to the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who attended to him during his illness, acknowledging their efforts to provide him with care and dignity.

The family extended its gratitude to the governments and people of Egypt and Ghana for their support throughout the difficult period.

It has appealed to the public to respect its privacy as it mourns the loss, adding that details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to his life and legacy would be announced in due course.

Gamal’s death marks the loss of a member of the family of one of Africa’s most influential independence-era leaders, as well as a journalist and intellectual whose work focused on the political and social questions shaping the continent and the international community.

The family concluded its statement with a prayer for his eternal peace.
