The Volta Regional Chapter of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Ladies Association, in collaboration with the Ho Teaching Hospital, organized a free breast and prostate cancer screening exercise at the premises of GBC’s Volta Star Radio in Ho.
The aim of this screening exercise was to raise awareness and promote healthy lifestyles among the general public.
This year’s theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is “No One Should Face Cancer Alone,” which is why prostate screening for men was included in the event.
About 150 people participated, with the majority being men who came to check their prostate health.
“As ladies who work at GBC, we are committed not only to entertaining, educating, and informing the public but also to promoting the health and well-being of our listeners and the general community at large,” stated Patience Esi Tamakloe, Chairperson of the GBC Ladies Association, Volta Chapter.
The lead medical practitioner and surgeon for the screening exercise, Dr. Wisdom Kondoh, emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, stating that they can significantly improve treatment outcomes for patients suffering from cancer and other illnesses.
“Regular screenings can reduce breast cancer mortality rates by up to 30% with early detection. Prostate cancer screening can identify cancer at its earliest stages, making regular check-ups essential whether or not one is currently suffering from breast or prostate cancer. We need to take care of ourselves,” Dr. Kondoh advised.
Madam Lukutor Sincere, the Head Promotions Officer at the Ho Teaching Hospital, shared insights on breast and prostate cancer screening with the audience waiting to be screened.
She encouraged them not to fear a diagnosis of breast or prostate cancer, stressing that such diagnoses are not death sentences. She urged women to take advantage of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to schedule regular check-ups.
Some beneficiaries of the screening exercise expressed their gratitude to the management of GBC and the GBC Ladies Association for organizing the free breast and prostate cancer screening.
“Thank you, GBC, and the Ladies Association, for this free screening, I’m grateful for the opportunity to check my prostate health, this initiative has educated me on the importance of regular check-ups.”
The exercise was supported by the Volta Regional Red Cross Society of Ghana, Rich Purified Water, Albetisam, and Aucre Restaurant from Adonai Estate Limited.
