GCB Bank-funded GHS 32m Paediatric facility at University of Ghana on track

GCB Bank PLC’s fully funded paediatric facility at the University of Ghana Hospital, an investment of approximately GHS32 million, remains firmly on course for inauguration in September 2026. This follows a project monitoring visit led by Managing Director, Farihan Alhassan.

The inspection, brought together the Bank’s leadership team, including Abdulsalam Alhassan, Executive Director for Wholesale & Investment Banking, and Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, Chief Marketing, Communications & Customer Experience Officer.

They were joined by University of Ghana officials led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, along with Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, Chair of the Hospital Management Committee and the project contractor. Together, the team assessed progress and reviewed timelines toward the project’s completion. The facility is designed to address critical gaps in paediatric healthcare delivery in Ghana, particularly in neonatal intensive care, high-dependency treatment, and specialist child health services.

Once completed, the facility will feature a six-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an eight-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU), an eight-bed infant unit, a twelve-bed ward for toddlers and older children, two isolation beds, two private rooms with neonatal support equipment, a twelve-bed emergency ward, a two-bed kangaroo mothers’ ward.

The facility will also include an Outpatient Department with four consulting rooms, a pharmacy, a laboratory, a dedicated play area, a conference room and two administrative offices.

Speaking during the visit, Farihan described the project as a strategic investment in the country’s healthcare future. He noted that the facility will not only enhance paediatric care but also strengthen the capacity of one of Ghana’s leading teaching hospitals to train health professionals and support research.

Construction of the facility commenced in January 2025 following a sod-cutting ceremony. The contractor confirmed that works remain on schedule, with the next phase focusing on the delivery and installation of medical equipment beginning in April.

Professor Amfo commended GCB Bank for its sustained commitment to national development, stating that the project will significantly improve paediatric healthcare delivery across the country. She emphasised the importance of partnerships between academia and industry in addressing national challenges.

Also commenting on the project, Dr. Afua Amoabeng, Director of the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate, highlighted the urgent need for expanded paediatric capacity, noting that the facility will play a critical role in reducing child mortality and improving access to quality care.

The paediatric facility is expected to serve thousands of children annually while contributing to medical education and research. Upon completion, it will become a key addition to Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure, easing pressure on existing facilities and improving survival outcomes for children.

The project underscores GCB Bank’s broader commitment to supporting national development through impactful investments in healthcare, education and community infrastructure.
