George Afriyie: GHC1m is not the biggest payment clubs have received from GFA

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has disputed claims that the GHC1 million being given to each Ghana Premier League club is the biggest financial support clubs have received from the Association.Speaking on Sporty FM’s Sporty Breakfast, Afriyie pointed to the Glo sponsorship era, saying clubs received $120,000 each from the telecommunications company, in addition to $40,000 from broadcast rights.Ive heard people say that this is the biggest money clubs have received from the GFA. Thats not true. Glo paid $120,000 to each club plus $40,000 from broadcast rights, Afriyie said.So they got $120,000. And that was sponsorship, not state money.His comments come after GFA President Kurt Okraku announced at the Associations 32nd Ordinary Congress that each of the 18 Ghana Premier League clubs would receive GHC1 million ahead of the 2026/27 season.The payment is linked to the GFAs broadcast and commercialisation arrangements with Adesa Productions Limited (APL), with clubs also receiving a similar GHC1 million allocation last season.Afriyie has already questioned the transparency surrounding the latest payment, particularly the source of the funds.If the GFA president says hes going to give each club GHC1 million, the first question I expect Hearts and Kotoko to ask is, where is the money coming from? he said in an earlier appearance.He has also questioned why the GFA would not acknowledge the government if the latest funding came from the state.Afriyies latest comments therefore place the current GHC1 million support in the context of previous commercial arrangements that provided direct financial benefits to Ghana Premier League clubs.
