The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken disciplinary action against Nations FC player Emmanuel Annor following a controversial celebration during a recent league match. Annor was fined GHS 500 after scoring a goal against Asante Kotoko and removing his shirt to reveal a religious message on his undergarment which reads, ‘I belong to Jesus.’
According to an official statement released by the GFA on May 13, 2025, Annor was found guilty of misconduct by the league’s Disciplinary Committee. The committee emphasized that displaying any religious or political messages on clothing or during match celebrations violates the league’s regulations on player conduct. The fine serves as a warning to Annor and other players about maintaining neutrality and discipline on the field.
In addition to the financial penalty, Annor received a strong warning from the GFA. The statement clearly indicated that any similar misconduct in future matches would lead to more severe sanctions, including possible suspension or further disciplinary measures.
The incident has provoked mixed reactions among fans and sports analysts. Some supporters argue that players should have the freedom to express their faith and beliefs, while others believe that sports should be kept apolitical and free from religious displays. The GFA’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining a standard of conduct that promotes fairness and respect in Ghanaian football.
