The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) will hold its 2024 annual general conference at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from September 9 to 13, 2024.
The conference, themed “Peaceful, Fair and Transparent Election; The Key to Sustainable Democracy,” will mark the final term of the outgoing GBA President, Yaw Acheampong Boafo.
Boafo, who has served as GBA President since his election at the 2021 Bar conference, will be succeeded by a new leader.
Boafo previously took over from Anthony Forson Jnr and won the 2021 election with 52.83% of the vote against Efua Ghartey.
Ghartey, bidding for the presidency, faces competition from Agbesi Kwadzo Dzakpasu.
Ghartey was called to the Bar in 1991. She is a co-founder of Ghartey & Ghartey and has extensive experience in various legal and organizational roles, including her recent tenure as the Immediate Past President of the Greater Accra Branch of the GBA.
Dzakpasu admitted to the Bar in 2000, holds an LLM in Banking and Finance from the London School of Economics and an LLB from the University of Ghana.
He is the current Board Chairman of Pensions Alliance Trust and has served on several boards, including Media General Ghana Limited and Ghana Grid Company.
The election has heightened interest due to Ghartey’s association with the ruling New Patriotic Party through her husband, Joe Ghartey, and Dzakpasu’s support, reportedly from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
The outcome will determine the GBA’s future leadership and direction in the coming years.
