Ghana coach Otto Addo has expressed concerns about the condition of the pitch at Baba Yara Stadium ahead of the Black Stars’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Addo admitted that the pitch in Kumasi is not ideal for the style of play he envisions for his team.
“It is concerning because the way we want to play, we need a good pitch,” Addo stated.
He noted that despite last-minute efforts by the National Sports Authority to prepare the pitch, it might not meet the necessary standards.
“At the moment there are internal discussions that there would be no discussions about the pitch,” he said, emphasising the need for improved infrastructure.
He acknowledged the challenges, including weather and frequent use of the stadium, and called for better long-term solutions.
“We have to better the infrastructure in general,” Addo added, stressing the importance of quality playing surfaces for Ghanaian football.
Ghana will play Angola on September 5 and then travel to face Niger on September 9.
Addo has named a 23-man squad for the fixtures.
