Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has backed Jordan Ayew after recalling the experienced forward to the Black Stars squad despite growing calls for him to retire from international football.Ayew endured a difficult 2026 FIFA World Cup, failing to register a shot on target across Ghana’s campaign. He also made a slow start to life at Sheffield United after joining the club as a free agent, playing less than 70 minutes across three appearances.The 35-year-old joined Sheffield United late in the transfer window and has yet to establish himself as a regular starter.Despite the criticism surrounding the veteran forward, Queiroz believes Ayew can still play an important role for Ghana as the team begins a new chapter.I still have this young boy, Jordan Ayew, who is starting to renew his career. It is a starting point, Queiroz said.Ayew has been a key figure for the Black Stars for more than a decade and remains one of the most experienced players in the squad.His inclusion has, however, generated debate among supporters, with some calling for the striker to make way for younger players as Ghana looks to rebuild following its failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.Queiroz has opted to retain Ayew as part of his plans as Ghana prepare for their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.The Black Stars will face Cte dIvoire in Bouak on Thursday, September 24, before hosting The Gambia three days later.Queiroz will hope Ayew can use his experience to contribute to the team’s rebuilding process as Ghana seeks to return to the AFCON and challenge for major honours.
