Defender Alphonso Davies has revealed that he did not attract interest from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) because he wasn’t a big name until his move to Bayern Munich.

Davies was born to Liberian parents in Ghana, and he chose to play for Canada in 2017 after acquiring citizenship status.

The 22-year-old featured for Canadian-based Vancouver Whitecaps before striking a deal with Bayern Munich in 2018 where he gradually earned the accolade as one of the most promising lateral defenders playing in Europe.

Explaining why he chose Canada over Ghana, Davies stated that Ghana didn’t approach him for his services until his move to the Bundesliga which was a time too late to change his mind.

“Ghana never reached out and also my mum was like, no [to the idea of me playing for Ghana],” he disclosed on the Say Less podcast.

“I was playing like not even like the academy they never like said [anything about wanting me] I wasn’t a big name. When the news came out that I was going to Bayern, then I got a message from the Ghana Federation.

“I think it was someone from the federation who texted me on Instagram because he didn’t have my number or email but it was too late. At that time I already got my citizenship and made it to Canada.”

In the same year in which he finalised and obtained citizenship status with Canada, he was selected in CONCACAF Gold Cup Best XI as well as winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup Bright Future Award. He also won the CONCACAF Gold Cup Golden Boot Award in 2017.

He has featured in 39 matches for Canada and has scored 13 goals
