Ghana have been ranked 24th in the final standings of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after making a return to the knockout stage of footballs biggest tournament.
The Black Stars position was confirmed following the conclusion of the expanded 48-team competition, which saw Spain crowned world champions after defeating Argentina in the final. England finished third, while France secured fourth place.
Ghanas 24th-place ranking represents a respectable achievement for the West African nation, who returned to the global stage with a competitive campaign that saw them progress beyond the group phase and reach the newly introduced Round of 32.
The Black Stars finished ahead of several recognised football nations in the final rankings, including Ecuador (25th), South Africa (26th), Sweden (27th), Austria (28th), Algeria (30th) and Senegal (31st).
Ghana were drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama and began their tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto. Young midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi emerged as the hero after scoring a late winner to secure a valuable opening-day victory.
They followed that result with a disciplined defensive display against England, holding the European giants to a goalless draw in Boston. However, the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match, leaving them third in the group standings.
Despite missing out on an automatic qualification spot, Ghana advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams under FIFAs expanded tournament format.
Their World Cup journey eventually ended in Kansas City after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia. Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute as Colombia progressed to the next round, while Ghana bowed out of the competition.
The campaign, however, marked an improvement from Ghanas previous World Cup outings in 2014 and 2022, where the Black Stars failed to reach the knockout stages.
The tournament also provided a platform for emerging talents, with Caleb Yirenkyi among the standout performers, while experienced players such as captain Jordan Ayew and midfielder Thomas Partey played key leadership roles during the campaign.
Ghanas 24th-place finish at their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance highlights the teams progress and provides a foundation for rebuilding ahead of future international challenges.
The focus now shifts to the next stage of Ghanas football journey, with the Black Stars preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia as they begin their campaign to return to Africas biggest football tournament.
