The Black Starlets opened their 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory over Togo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, moving to the top of Group A.

David Kwarteng scored the only goal of the match in the seventh minute at the August 4 Sports Stadium, securing all three points for Ghana in their first fixture of the competition.

The tournament is being used as the qualifying competition for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghanas win gives them an early advantage in Group A after hosts Burkina Faso were held to a goalless draw by Benin in the other opening-day match. The Black Starlets sit top with three points, while Burkina Faso and Benin have one point each. Togo remain without a point.

Kassim Ocanseys side created a number of chances to add to their lead during an entertaining encounter, but could not convert them.

Striker Alidu Issah, winger Yaw Acheampong and playmaker Abdul Latif Wunzalgu were among the Ghana players who failed to take opportunities that would have given their side greater control of the match.

Their inability to extend the advantage did not prevent Ghana from claiming a valuable victory, however, and the result provides a positive foundation for their campaign.

The Black Starlets will play Benin in their second Group A match on Tuesday, October 13. They will be aiming for another positive result to strengthen their prospects of progressing in the qualifying race for the 2027 U-17 AFCON.
