The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has observed that Ghana is in a stat9e of despair and requires prayers for divine intervention.
He has advised Ghanaians not to take the religious freedom being enjoyed for granted.
The Speaker made the observation at Ayigya in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of Ashanti when he led a delegation of Parliament to participate in an interdenominational prayer session.
The event was the second in a series of planned nationwide prayer intercessions, an initiative of Parliament, with Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, being the first host.
The intercessory prayers are to seek divine intervention for free, fair, transparent, and peaceful Presidential and Parliamentary elections on December 7 this year.
Reverend Ministers from different denominations led various prayer sessions with the General Overseer of the Calvary Charismatic Centre, CCC, Pastor Ransford Obeng, leading a special prophetic prayer session to invoke divine intervention to destroy every machination by individuals and political parties to tamper with the genuine will of the people of Ghana during and after the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The Speaker asserted that Ghana’s 4th Republic has come this far only by divine grace amidst the prevailing unfavourable socio-economic situation.
“The current situation of the country is a sign of despair, and this calls for prayers… I saw people speak on TV going to write their names with knives and guns. What about when going to vote and what’ll happen when announcement is given that Mr. A or B has won! Do we have to wait until it happens before we start calling on God?” Mr. Bagbin quizzed.
The Speaker warned Ghanaians not to take the prevailing religious freedom for granted, drawing on situations elsewhere in Africa where certain political situations exist.
Mr. Bagbin emphasised, “we should not take our faith, our belief in God and the holy message in the Holy Bible for granted. There’re many many countries you cannot build a church, and here we’re, Freedommmm! You can take a mic and enter a vehicle and praise God and the people will listen to you.”
He explained that this informed the decision of Parliament to embark on the Regional prayer intercessions under the banner ‘Ghana Prays’ on the theme: ‘Ghana Shall Rise Again.’
The participants made an intercession for different concerns of the country and also for the President as well as for an improved economy.
The General Overseer of the CCC, Paster Ransford Obeng, sought God’s intervention to destroy any evil bothering hacking of the EC’s data and electronic system, any plans to use Ashanti region to manipulate the electoral process or any efforts to tamper with the elections against the will of Ghanaians.
Also on the Parliamentary delegation were the Chairman of the Ashanti Caucus in Parliament, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, who is also the MP for Asante Akyem Central, the MP for Afadjato, Mad. Angela Oforiwaa Alorwu-Tay; and the Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Ahoma Djietior.
The Speaker signed an autograph on a piece of the national flag to express his belief in God for free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections this year.
