The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly urged media practitioners to intensify fact-checking efforts and combat misinformation as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the 28th GJA Award Committee inauguration event in Accra, President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour underscored the pivotal role of the media in shaping public opinion, holding leaders accountable, and ensuring transparent governance.
Dwumfour emphasized, “With great power comes great responsibility. The media can influence voter behaviour and must wield it responsibly to uphold democratic governance and facilitate peaceful elections.”
He urged media outlets to prioritize balanced, impartial reporting, avoiding sensationalism and bias. Dwumfour stressed the importance of focusing on issue-based reporting rather than personality-driven coverage, advocating for diverse perspectives, including those of marginalized communities.
“In an age where fake news and divisive narratives proliferate,” Dwumfour remarked, “the media must remain vigilant, fact-check information rigorously, and debunk misinformation promptly.”
Highlighting the media’s constitutional role as the fourth Estate of the Realm, Dwumfour affirmed that ensuring accurate reporting and countering misinformation is essential to effectively fulfilling this mandate.
The GJA’s call comes amidst heightened scrutiny of media coverage leading up to the elections, with stakeholders emphasizing the critical need for integrity and accuracy in reporting to safeguard democratic principles and promote national cohesion.
